Credit Union of Texas Partners with Local Nonprofit and Museums to Celebrate Local Black Leaders’ Accomplishments with Mobile Outreach and Traveling Exhibition at Its Plano Branch

As a part of its ongoing commitment to the communities it serves, Credit Union of Texas (CUTX) has partnered with PlanoBlackHistory.org, Douglass Visions Committee and Heritage Farmstead Museum to create a free, in-person experience celebrating the accomplishments of local Black leaders in Plano, Texas. The mobile museum will debut from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 26, at the CUTX Plano Branch, 7801 Coit Road, and will run through February 28th as a self-guided experience during normal business hours.

“As a company, we are committed to embodying the principles of diversity and inclusion in all that we do,” said Eric Pointer, President & CEO of CUTX. “By partnering with these notable organizations, CUTX wants to help recognize and highlight the work of the many Black leaders throughout Plano’s history. We are thankful for the opportunity to be a part of this mobile exhibit and look forward to welcoming the North Texas community to our Plano Branch.”

The mobile museum will serve as a resource for the community, and attendees at the kickoff event will experience a lively panel with local Black leaders moderated by local nonprofit organization Douglass Community Visions’ Chief Operating Officer Dr. Tamara Thomas. In addition, the exhibit will include a virtual walkthrough of the most popular displays from PlanoBlackHistory.org, a local online museum, along with artifacts from the Plano African American Museum and the Jubilee exhibit curated by Heritage Farmstead Museum, a Plano-based living history museum. The event is free to the public and will include light bites and refreshments.

"Discovering the rich history of the contributions of all people make me hopeful that we can combat the myth of absence together as a community, starting right here in Plano," said Girl Scout Gold Award honoree Zara Jones, the creator of PlanoBlackHistory.org.

This partnership comes a year after Jones launched PlanoBlackHistory.org to give students and families access to local history online. PlanoBlackHistory.org, the virtual home of the former Plano Black History Museum, is a combination of multiple exhibits that celebrates the Arts, History, Heritage, Culture and Contributions of African Americans in North Texas, including the founding Black families of Plano. The museum has six displays spotlighting the new narrative of local history and also includes the time capsule exhibit of the Plano African American Museum, which was located in the historic Douglass Community before closing its doors over a decade ago.
